I'm
fairly new to SEO; while I've been making websites since 1997, and editing them
for others since 1999, I didn't even start reading about SEO until 2001. By
then, I'd been given lots of bad advice, and done a fair number of stupid things
- Yes, I had a list of my sites on geocities. "get extra links" I'd
been told. I'd long forgotten all about it when a sad stalker found my geocities.com
site and tried to make out that my 2001 mess 'proved' something about my ethical
standards. Twit. But imagine his joy if he'd found the other 18 geocities sites,
all identical, even the same domain name - one for each geocities suffix, including
Korea. Of course it was stupid, and of course it didn't help my sites in
the least. Neither did the white text on a white page I did in 1999. Whats
the point of these confessions? Simple; most of us have done stupid things with
our sites, not because we are stupid people - or evil people, or spammers. But
because we were poorly advised, often by people who should have known better. Over
the years, since 2002, I've visited hundreds of sites specifically to see why
they weren't 'doing the business' with the search engines. And while every
site is unique, I've been amazed by how often the same problems occur; yes, white
text on white pages; even black text on black pages (I've even seen pink text
on pink pages!). And many other errors. And I've found when I advise people, much
of what I have to say is very, very similar to the advice I've had to give scores
of other people. Often these errors have been there for years, long forgotten;
others are more recent. Few matter, much. But take them together, and you have
a sick site; you have sick site syndrome. And I've discovered that
while all these issues get discussed individually, no-one has linked them together.
Until now. This site is long overdue; read around, I hope it helps you to dig
out those little errors that most people make while they are learning. With
a 'home page', it might not matter - for a business, it may be the difference
between making money and failing miserably. Good Luck!
